Desde Alabama hasta Nicaragua, el viaje de Carole Harper estuvo impulsado por una pasión por la justicia y la dignidad. While leading Habitat’s work, Carole founded Wellspring Center—the original name of El Porvenir. Habitat required a latrine in every home, which helped address contaminated water. Wellspring grew directly out of Habitat projects, working with rural Nicaraguans to build community wells, washing stations, and even private bathing areas, always prioritizing rural women. Later they introduced rope pumps and deepened and lined wells with concrete cylinders.
Word spread quickly, and communities began requesting El Porvenir’s support, prompting Carole to formally establish the organization. For 18 years she led El Porvenir, transforming the lives of thousands of rural families and forging an impressive synergy with them. She also came to love gallo pinto, nacatamal, and arroz a la valenciana.
On more than one occasion campesinos showed their affection by gifting her a live chicken, one of whom she named Esmeralda and kept as a pet for years. Friends and colleagues remember her as sensitive, empathetic, and fiercely determined.
Carole the judge and the President of the Board
In the 1990s, Carole moved to California, where she worked as a judge while continuing her role with El Porvenir as President of the Board of Directors, serving until 2007. She returned to Nicaragua in 2004 when she adopted her son, Mauricio, and in August 2008 they moved to the United States so he could pursue his education and opportunities.
She said, “I am proudest of the fact that El Porvenir has been ‘Nicaraguanized.’ When we first started the organization, the only employees were temporary North Americans. But gradually, El Porvenir became a Nicaraguan organization, which is how it should be. That’s one of the reasons why El Porvenir is so successful. We hire local Nicaraguans who know the area and the people and who stay with EP long-term, and give them the chance to flower.”

Desde 1990, El Porvenir ha trabajado codo a codo con familias y escuelas rurales en Nicaragua para construir pozos, sistemas de agua, letrinas, estaciones de lavado de manos en las escuelas, así como para apoyar proyectos de restauración de cuencas hidrográficas.
Carole Harper, jueza en California, fundó El Porvenir en 1990 tras trabajar con Habitat for Humanity en Nicaragua. Creó El Porvenir para abordar la falta de agua potable en las comunidades rurales y responder a la determinación de la población local de mejorar su nivel de vida.
El Porvenir se convirtió en un programa integral que abarca agua, saneamiento, higiene, educación sobre mantenimiento y restauración de cuencas hidrográficas. Cuando El Porvenir comenzó a ofrecer viajes de voluntariado, Nicaragua se recuperaba de las secuelas de una guerra civil y carecía de una industria turística; era difícil encontrar guías que hablaran inglés, transporte público u hoteles fuera de Managua. Para que los norteamericanos pudieran viajar a Nicaragua y conocer de primera mano el trabajo de desarrollo rural de El Porvenir, fue necesario que esta organización actuara como agencia de viajes. Los viajes de voluntariado llevan a pequeños grupos de norteamericanos a zonas rurales para experimentar la vida en los pueblos y trabajar junto a familias locales en diversos proyectos.
Lo que antes era una organización con un solo empleado que realizaba cuatro proyectos al año, se ha convertido en una destacada organización internacional sin ánimo de lucro con una plantilla mayoritariamente nicaragüense que colabora anualmente con miles de nicaragüenses.
